A new architecture to enhance road holding and agility in total comfort and safety

The new compact Alfa Romeo has been designed to appeal to customers looking for a distinctive saloon providing excellent levels of comfort and the best possible dynamic performance.

The Giulietta introduces an entirely new platform - referred to as “compact” - designed to satisfy the most demanding customers in terms of road-holding, agility and safety. It ensures both exceptional dynamic performance and high comfort levels, thanks to the refined technical solutions employed for the suspension, a new-generation steering system, a light and rigid structure created from materials such as aluminium and high-strength steels and avant-garde manufacturing techniques.

This new architecture will allow the Giulietta to accommodate the needs of all customers in this category, teaming on-board comfort with functional interiors and boot, with the typical dynamic qualities of every Alfa Romeo.

Driving satisfaction and comfort can be adapted to meet every customer’s specific needs thanks to the Alfa DNA selector, a device that customises the vehicle’s behaviour to suit different road conditions and driving styles. The new architecture of the Alfa Giulietta was in fact designed to integrate the vehicle’s different systems and exploit them to the full, thus emphasising the three set-up functions (Dynamic, Normal and All Weather) available through the Alfa DNA selector. This device, fitted as standard on the entire range of the new model, is designed to modify the operating parameters of the engine, gearbox, steering system and Q2 electronic differential, in addition to the behaviour logic of the Vehicle Dynamic Control system (VDC).

Sporty and comfortable, Italian style

The perfect blend of sportiness and style, the Alfa Giulietta redefines the Brand’s technological standards and emotional values.

The front is a development of Alfa’s trademark triangular shield, with a brand new interpretation of the classic emblem, embedded in the front bumper and suspended between the air vents. This is the point of origin for the design of the entire car, which teams an energetic personality with marked stylish shapes. The front headlights have DRL with LED technology and a daytime function for maximum active safety.

Even the profile of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta is brimming with personality, making the model appear to be an agile and sturdy car. This is mostly due to the side windows which recall the appearance of a coupé, emphasising the dynamism and fluidity of the shapes, thanks also the concealed rear door handles. The ribs on the vehicle sides elongate the car while the clean lines which end at the rear accentuate the angular shape of the car body.

The rear, like the front and side, features marked styling which emphasises the feeling of a muscular car, decidedly gripped onto the road surface. In addition, like the headlights, the innovative rear lights also use LED technology which serves not only a stylish purpose but also preventive safety.

Lastly, the measurements of the new car design a compact and dynamic shape, while at the same time guaranteeing excellent comfort and a spacious 350 litre boot: in fact, it is 4.35 metres long, 1.46 metres high and 1.80 metres wide, with a wheelbase of 2.63 metres.

Innovative features for maximum in-car wellbeing

Attention to detail and high quality materials used for the interiors are, today as yesterday, the most evolved expression of Italian style. More specifically, the dominant concept in the interiors of the new model is lightness. The lines are taut and the dashboard develops horizontally. The seats are wraparound and, at the same time, their shape was designed to ensure maximum comfort even during long journeys.

Thanks to the enhanced ergonomics in the interior design, every command is ideally located: the main ones are grouped together at the centre of the dashboard and feature the same design as the commands on the 8C Competizione. In addition, the navigation system with pop-up display allows the driver to see maps or to display the mechanical operating parameters set on the Alfa DNA device without having to take the eyes off the road.

There are practical open storage compartments situated in various parts of the passenger compartment: in front of the gear lever, on the centre console and on the door interior covers. There are closed storage compartments - depending on the chosen version - on the top of the dashboard, under the dashboard opposite the front passenger (cooled with dual zone climate control), in the front and rear armrests.

Innovative engines for a thrilling yet environmentally-friendly drive

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta guarantees the highest levels of performance and technology through a range of engines that are purely state of the art in terms of technology, performance levels and environmental-friendliness. At the time of its European launch, four Turbo engines will be available, all with Euro 5 type-approval and fitted with the “Start&Stop” system to reduce consumption levels and emissions fitted as standard: two petrol versions (120 HP 1.4TB and 170 HP 1.4TB MultiAir) and two diesels (105 HP 1.6 JTDM and 170 HP 2.0 JTDM, both second-generation MultiJet engines).

Lastly, the European range is completed by the astounding 235 HP 1750 TBi teamed with the exclusive Quadrifoglio Verde interiors.

More specifically, the new model equipped with the 235 HP 1750 TBi engine is a true representative of the way in which Alfa Romeo interprets the high end of this segment offer.

Not just a means of transport, but a vehicle that can really connect with the customer. There is muscular acceleration thanks to plenty of torque even at low revs, a smooth response that minimises gearbox use thanks to the extension typical of modern petrol engines, and an engine noise that is engaging without ever becoming intrusive. In detail, the 1750 Turbo petrol engine boasts advanced technical solutions including direct fuel injection, two continuously variable valve timing units, a turbocharger and a revolutionary scavenging control system that gets rid of any turbo lag.

The resulting performance is comparable to – or better than – that of many 3 litre engines while still delivering fuel consumption typical of a compact four cylinder unit. It should be noted that the specific power of 134 HP/litre is the highest in the world for a 4-cylinder unit fitted in this category of vehicles, as well as being the highest ever achieved by an Alfa Romeo engine.

The specific torque too, totalling 194 Nm/litre, is the highest of all petrol engines in this category, while the maximum torque of 340 Nm, reached at 1,900 revs alone, is an absolute best.

The range of engines available can accommodate the needs of all customers. First of all the 120 HP 1.4TB is the ideal engine for those in search of a car that can handle city traffic effortlessly while keeping running costs to a minimum. The turbo engine guarantees prompt response even at low revs (the maximum torque is achieved at just 1,750 revs) while the Start&Stop, in the city, makes it possible to cut consumption and harmful emission levels drastically, without compromising comfort and on-board safety.

Thanks to the exceptional qualities of the new “compact” architecture, this version is able to blend fantastic dynamic and motoring performance levels with best-in-class comfort and practicality.

All the engines are teamed with a state-of-the-art manual 6-speed gearbox from the three axle transmission family, which can withstand and transmit high maximum torque values. Subsequently, the MultiAir and 170 HP 2.0 JTDM engines will also be teamed with an innovative dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The arrival of the Alfa TCT gearbox will also mark the launch of the first engine in New Zealand to use the revolutionary MultiAir technology that dramatically cuts fuel consumption and emissions while also boosting performance. The new TCT transmission will be matched to the 99 kW 1.4 litre MultiAir engine and, in another first for New Zealand, this new version of the Alfa Romeo MiTo will be fitted with the Award-winning Stop&Start technology that turns off the engine when it is not required, further saving fuel and cutting emissions.

“This advanced technology combines to provide excellent performance on the road, at the fuel bowser and from the exhaust pipe,” says Mr Malatios. The Alfa Romeo Mito 1.4 MultiAir zips to 100 kmh in just 8.4 seconds, yet, at the same time, offers an open road fuel consumption of just 4.5 litres 100 km and CO2 emissions of just 129 g/km. Despite this advanced technology and the benefits it offers, we expect pricing to be comparable with a conventional automatic gearbox.”

The Alfa Romeo MiTo MultiAir and TCT Gearbox will arrive in New Zealand in the third quarter of 2010, when local specifications and prices will be announced.

The Alfa TCT Gearbox

Developed and produced by FPT - Fiat Powertrain Technologies - the new gearbox belongs to a modern family of six-speed gearboxes (C635), which saw their debut in the manual form in the Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4 Turbo MultiAir last year.

With the launch of the TCT version, Alfa Romeo is the first company to combine a double clutch gearbox with Stop&Start technology fitted to a MultiAir engine. Fiat has been awarded no less than 23 patents on this new technology.

The new gearbox uses two gear sets, each with its own clutch, which allows the gearbox to select the next required gear while the previous gear is still engaged. This allows a virtually seamless gearshift and a continuous supply of torque and power to the driving wheels. The result is a level of performance and comfort not seen on a robotized manual in the past.

To ensure smooth and efficient operation, the Alfa TCT interacts with more systems than any other gearbox of its type on the market, including the steering, brake and accelerator controls, the Alfa DNA switch, the Start & Stop system, ABS and the body inclinometer which is the slope detector for Hill Holder system. The use of a dry clutch allows for a more compact mechanism and further cuts power losses removing the friction losses associated with a wet clutch. Further savings are made by the dry clutch requiring less oil in the gearbox – 4.8 litres less than a wet system – and there is no requirement for an oil cooling system, all cutting weight and maintenance costs, a total saving of 6.0 per cent over a wet system.

Finally, it should be noted that the new Alfa TCT transmission boasts no less than 23 patents in three areas.

The MultiAir system represents as significant and larger improvement in efficient and emissions for petrol engines over non-MultiAir engines as did Common rail/Direct Injection, another Fiat invention, with diesel engines. With MultiAir fuel consumption is improved by 10 per cent, power by 10 per cent, torque by 15 per cent, carbon dioxide is cut by 10 per cent, particulates by 40 per cent and NOx is slashed by 60 percent.

The heart of the MultiAir is a new electro-hydraulic valve management system that allows a reduction in fuel consumption (by controlling air directly via the engine intake valves, without using the throttle) and polluting emissions (via combustion control). As befits a flag-bearer for the downsizing concept, the MultiAir is a versatile system that is easily applicable to all petrol engines that may potentially be developed for diesel engines in the future.

Load management by means of the intake valves also means that combustion can also optimised even during motorway use. The area within which the mixture is made richer has been greatly limited by exploiting system characteristics: the fuel-air mixture is still stoichiometric at 150 kmh, for example with particularly low specific consumption.

The new generation of MultiAir power units has also been designed to enhance the car set-up options available via the Alfa DNA selector to ensure the most effective response to the driver’s expectations and the different road conditions.

How the MultiAir system works

The project aim was ambitious: to allow the intake valves to be controlled without their strict dependency on the camshaft, which has nearly always represented the only way to ensure their operation over more than 100 years of technological development.

Achieving this goal was possible only by the valuable wealth of technological and human experience built up over the years by the Alfa Romeo brand and Fiat Powertrain Technologies on ordinary roads and race tracks.

It is therefore no exaggeration to claim that MultiAir is a distillation of the exceptional technological pathway that allowed the Italian motoring industry to make its name on roads and racetracks throughout the world. It is yet another Alfa Romeo milestone in the history of the motor car: production of the first aluminium twin shaft engine on a mass produced car (Alfa Romeo Giulia), the use of twin variable valve timing and the Twin Spark (Alfa Romeo 75), the first modular engine (Alfetta) and the Common Rail system (Alfa Romeo 156). And now the Alfa Romeo MiTo extends this extraordinary list of achievements with the MultiAir system, a versatile technology that is easily applicable to all petrol engines that may potentially be developed for diesel engines in the future.

In conventional petrol engines, load is controlled by modulating the density of air taken into the cylinders by means of the throttle valve. This determines an efficiency loss known as “pumping work”. The MultiAir system does away with this loss. The load is controlled by adjusting the volume of air added at constant density temperature due to direct and extremely flexible control of the intake valves.

The system controls the intake valves by means of an electro-hydraulic system: a piston operated by a mechanical cam is connected to the intake valve by means of a hydraulic chamber controlled by a normally open solenoid valve.

Two situations may arise: when the solenoid valve is closed, the fluid in the hydraulic chamber acts as a solid body and transmits the lift law imposed by the mechanical intake cam to the intake valves. In the second case, however, when the solenoid valve is open, fluid in the hydraulic chamber can flow out toward a low-pressure circuit: as a consequence, the intake valves no longer follow the mechanical cam profile and close under the effect of the two intake spring force. The final part of the valve closure travel is managed by a dedicated hydraulic brake that ensures a controlled approach stage under all service conditions.

It is therefore possible to obtain innumerable intake valve opening profiles with ease by adjusting the solenoid valve opening and closure times. In this way, engine load is controlled directly via the intake valves and no longer via the throttle valve.

The behaviour of the MultiAir in three different situations is described below.

• Maximum power delivery stage: the solenoid valve is permanently closed and the valves are fully opened by following the entire profile of the mechanical cam, which is specifically optimised for power at high speeds (long intake valve opening intervals).
• At low rpm and full load: the solenoid valve opens ahead of the theoretical cam profile, closing the intake valve prematurely. This does away with undesirable flow back into the manifold, maximising the air mass trapped in the cylinders.
• Under partial engine load conditions: the solenoid valve opens during the intake travel to partly open the valves and control the incoming air mass on the basis of the torque requirement. Alternatively, the valves may be partly opened to close the solenoid valve with a delay in relation to the beginning of the theoretical profile guaranteed by the mechanical cam. In this case, the speed of the air flow entering the cylinders is higher and generates a particularly high level of swirl in the cylinders. It is also possible to combine these two operating modes for the same intake event: this gives rise to the “Multilift” effect, which increases swirl and combustion speed at very low loads and speeds.

To sum up, the flexibility and speed of response guaranteed by the MultiAir system make it possible to manage engine load by means of the intake valves, eliminating the use of the throttle valve to benefit combustion efficiency at partial loads and hence fuel consumption.

Alfa Romeo Start&Stop

Debuting on the Alfa Romeo Mito MultiAir, the Start&Stop system controls temporary engine cut-off and subsequent restarting when the engine is idling at a standstill. In these situations, which are typical of heavy traffic in urban areas and when halted at traffic lights, and when the control strategy permits, the system automatically cuts out the engine in order to reduce fuel consumption and emissions up to 10% for an urban route and 3.5% over an NEDC type approval cycle.

As soon as the brake pedal is released or a gear engaged, the system then quickly restarts the engine to ensure the user an immediate response to controls. If the engine is turned off by mistake (stalls), when setting off from a traffic light, it can be restarted by simply pressing the clutch.

The Start&Stop system offers further advantages in terms of passenger compartment comfort because there are no vibrations or noises. The driver is also informed about the use of the device by means of messages on the control panel and can always turn it off using a control on the panel near the steering wheel.

Gear Shift Indicator (GSI)

The Gear Shift Indicator (GSI) linked to the “Start&Stop” is a kind of co-pilot that discreetly suggests to drivers when they should change gear, leading to more efficient use of the power unit in terms of fuel consumption. For example, the GSI may suggest shifting to a higher gear by means of a message on the control panel in order to allow the engine to guarantee combustion with a leaner mixture , i.e. containing less fuel, or to shift down a gear to make the best use of the available torque.

The device is permanently active when the Alfa DNA selector is set to “Normal” or “All Weather” in order to ensure a smooth and comfortable drive while also aiming to save fuel and slash emissions.

At a recent press conference, Dr. Gerdes made clear that his analysis and opinions of Professor Gilbert’s report “have been formulated with complete independence” and “should not be interpreted or described as an official position of Stanford University.” He also stated that “I am not here today to defend Toyota . . . I am here to clarify the contents of a report which I believe has been misinterpreted. I am concerned that these misinterpretations are driving public fear and public policy.”

Since then, a number of reports have noted that Toyota supports Stanford’s Center for Automotive Research, as previously disclosed by Dr. Gerdes, and implied that this relationship influenced the results of Dr. Gerdes’ work. These allegations are categorically false. Toyota is only one of many automotive manufacturers that support the Center for Automotive Research. In addition, Toyota supports other academic institutions that offer programs in the field, including the Division of Automotive Technology at Southern Illinois University.

Dr. Gerdes’ independent analysis and commentary is separate from the analysis of the Electronic Throttle Control System (“ETCS-i”) in Toyota and Lexus vehicles being performed by Exponent. Exponent is one of the world’s leading engineering and scientific consulting firms. Toyota retained Exponent in December of 2009 to help evaluate reports of unintended acceleration in Toyota and Lexus vehicles equipped with the ETCS-i system. Toyota will make the results of Exponent’s comprehensive, independent evaluation available to the public when it is completed. As with all such reliable engineering analyses, these results will contain the data and information necessary to validate Exponent’s conclusions.

The contract was signed earlier this week and expires at the conclusion of the Colts’ 2012-13 football season.

Mirroring elements of the 2009-10 program, this new sponsorship contract includes Toyota vehicles being displayed at all entrances to Lucas Oil Stadium, as well as a special Toyota Zone seating area in the stadium’s Northeast corner. During the season, Colts fans will have the opportunity to win Toyota Zone tickets by registering at any of the 11 Central Indiana Toyota dealers. In addition, fans attending each home game will have the chance to win two tickets to the next home game in a text-to-win contest that will highlight Toyota’s economic and philanthropic contributions.

Other promotional elements of the program include sponsorship of the starting line-up announcements, as well as Tri-vision, Jumbotron and concourse signage. Toyota advertisements will also be aired during the full season on radio and pre-season on television.

Toyota’s 2010 inclusion marks the fourth time the company has been recognized by DiversityInc and an improvement from the 2009 survey, where it ranked 40th overall.

A total of 449 companies vied for the honor this year, and awards were entirely driven by metrics obtained in a detailed survey. DiversityInc’s Top 50 companies demonstrate consistent strength in four areas: CEO Commitment, Human Capital, Corporate and Organizational Communications, and Supplier Diversity.

Sponsored by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. and administered by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the Toyota TAPESTRY Program serves as the nation’s largest science teacher grant program of its kind and awards funding for innovative science proposals submitted by educators in three areas: environmental science; physical science; and integrating literacy & science. Since the program’s inception in 1990, educators from all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Mariana Islands have received Toyota TAPESTRY Grants.

As a result of the Toyota TAPESTRY program, numerous educators have been gone on to win prestigious awards, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics, NSTA Distinguished Teaching Award and the Einstein Fellowship Award. Additionally, teachers have had the opportunity to expand their science-based projects beyond their classrooms, and impact their communities and even state legislature. Frequently, this includes garnering substantial additional funding.

Through two Toyota TAPESTRY grants over five years, Iowa middle school teacher Hector Ibarra and his students helped change Iowa legislation. “My TAPESTRY awards allowed my students to work outside of the classroom, where they partnered with community members and legislators to craft bills that later became laws,” said Ibarra. “These laws banned oil filters from being disposed in landfills, required recycling of mercury thermostats, and banned the manufacturing of mercury thermostats in Iowa. As a result, the Toyota TAPESTRY grants not only impacted my students, but will also continue to affect future generations because of the environmental progress accomplished.”

This year, 79 teachers in grades K-12 from across the United States were selected from more than 500 applications. Judges, accomplished in various areas of science, select projects that stand out in creativity, risk-taking and originality. Of the $550,000 granted this year, 50 teachers receive large grants of up to $10,000 each, and 29 receive mini grants of up to $2,500 each.

“For the past 20 years NSTA has partnered with Toyota to deliver this inspiring, far-reaching program that gives teachers the tools they need to introduce real-world science into their classrooms,” said Francis Eberle, Executive Director for NSTA. “It is a wonderfully rewarding partnership and NSTA is excited to celebrate 20 years of providing classroom resources and inspiration for countless educators and students with the Toyota TAPESTRY program.”

IIHS frontal crashworthiness evaluations are based on results of 40 mph frontal offset crash tests. A vehicle’s overall frontal evaluation is based on measurements of intrusion into the occupant compartment, driver seat test dummy injury severity, and the level of restraint system dummy movement during the test. By comparison, frontal crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is performed at 35 mph.

There is no new recall being planned for the Prius to address this issue. To be clear, the 2004-2009 Prius was part of Toyota’s November 2, 2009 announcement of a voluntary safety recall campaign to address floor mat entrapment in certain Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

Other models involved in this previously-announced recall include 2007-2010 Camry, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Tundra, 2007-2010 ES 350, 2006-2010 IS 250, and 2006-2010 IS 350. On January 27, 2010, Toyota expanded the campaign to include the 2008-2010 Highlander, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Venza, 2009-2010 Matrix and 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe.

The remedy process for these vehicles began at the end of 2009 and is occurring on a rolling schedule during 2010. Owners of the involved vehicles that have not yet been remedied are asked to take out any removable driver’s side floor mat and not replace it with any other floor mat.

A comprehensive analysis conducted by a world renowned engineering group, as well as testing by Toyota, has concluded the following about Professor Gilbert’s demonstration:

• The vehicle’s electronics were rewired and reengineered in multiple ways, in a specific sequence, and under conditions that are virtually impossible to occur in real-world conditions without visible evidence
• Toyota vehicle electronic systems were actively manipulated to mimic a valid full-throttle condition
• Substantially similar results were successfully created in vehicles made by other manufacturers.

In the demonstration dramatized by ABC on February 22, Professor Gilbert, assisted by segment reporter Brian Ross, asserted that he had detected a “dangerous” flaw in the Toyota electronic control system that he alleged could lead to unintended acceleration.

The following day, Professor Gilbert offered a preliminary report of his findings in testimony to the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.

Engineers at Exponent, one of the country’s leading engineering and scientific consulting firms, as well as Toyota engineers, have reviewed and recreated Gilbert’s demonstration with substantially similar results in representative vehicles of other makes.

Separately, at Toyota’s request, Dr. J. Christian Gerdes, associate professor of mechanical engineering at Stanford University and the director of the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford (CARS), conducted an independent review of Professor Gilbert’s testimony and the preliminary report presented to Congress.

Their findings were demonstrated today at a news conference during which the accelerator circuitry of a Toyota Avalon, as well as a sampling of well-regarded and popular competitive makes, was rewired and manipulated as Gilbert did in his demonstration.

Kristen Tabar, general manager of electronics systems, Toyota Technical Center, summarizes three of the major concerns with the artificial nature of Professor Gilbert’s demonstration.

“First, an electrical circuit that has been reengineered and rewired will not behave as it was originally designed and engineered,” said Tabar.

“Second, no automaker can or should be expected to design detection strategies for artificially created events in the absence of any evidence that such an event can occur in the real world.

“Third, if the artificial condition created by Professor Gilbert had occurred in the real world, it would have left readily detectable fingerprints.”

Exponent and Toyota engineers have found no evidence to suggest that any of the steps of Professor Gilbert’s demonstration exists in the real world. Thus, the fact that the Toyota Avalon used by Professor Gilbert did not show a Diagnostic Trouble Code after his demonstration does not indicate an undetectable safety defect. The same is true of the representative vehicles of other manufacturers tested by Exponent and Toyota.

Professor Gilbert’s reengineering and rewiring of the vehicle’s electrical system involves the following manipulations in a specific sequence. First, the protective insulation on two separate wires that carry the accelerator pedal position signals to the Engine Control Module must be individually cut or breached. Next, these wires are connected to each other through a 200 Ohm resistor.

This contrivance, by itself, did not cause an increase in engine speed. To cause an increase in engine speed, it is necessary to cut the insulation on a third wire, the 5-volt power supply to the accelerator pedal, and force a low resistance connection between the power supply and the secondary signal wire.

The resulting increase in engine speed is a result of the subsequent artificial and sudden application of the 5-volt power supply to this signal line with the rewired circuit. When subjected to similar unrealistic reengineering and rewiring, the competitive vehicles evaluated by Exponent and Toyota achieved substantially similar results with varying levels of resistances.

This manipulation of electrical components and a power source created artificial voltages that the engine control module, or ECM, would interpret as valid accelerator pedal signals. In essence, this test created a virtual, remote control accelerator pedal that replicated the vehicle’s own normally functioning accelerator pedal.

Also contrary to statements made in the ABC News story, had short circuits of the kind artificially created by Professor Gilbert occurred in real-world driving conditions, they would have left visible evidence such as damage or deterioration of the wiring and components.

As revealed in their testimony before Congress, Professor Gilbert’s Preliminary Report was commissioned by Sean Kane, a paid advocate for trial lawyers involved in litigation against Toyota and other automakers. Mr. Kane also appeared on the ABC News broadcast in support of the claim that Professor Gilbert’s demonstration revealed a flaw in the electronic throttle control system that could lead to “runaway” Toyota and Lexus vehicles. The relationship between Mr. Kane, Professor Gilbert and the trial lawyers who support Mr. Kane’s advocacy was not revealed by ABC News during the newscast, nor was Toyota offered an opportunity to view the demonstration or given time to respond.

Toyota believes that the public and Congressional committees have been misled by Professor Gilbert’s demonstration and the dramatization of it by ABC News. This has cast unwarranted doubt on the safety of Toyota and Lexus vehicles. Toyota remains confident in the integrity of the electronic throttle control system in its vehicles and there has been no reliable evidence of any kind to the contrary presented to the media or to Congress. Toyota’s electronic systems have multiple fail-safe mechanisms to shut off or reduce engine power in the event of a system failure. Extensive testing of this system by Toyota has not found any sign of a malfunction that could lead to unintended acceleration.

Toyota has commissioned Exponent to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the electronic throttle control systems in Toyota and Lexus vehicles. No limitations of any kind were imposed on Exponent by Toyota. This evaluation is ongoing. An interim report of Exponent’s findings has been provided to Congress and establishes the functionality of the electronic throttle control fail-safe systems. The final results of Exponent’s exhaustive analysis will be made public when completed. As with all such reliable engineering analyses, Exponent’s final results will provide the data and information necessary for others to validate Exponent’s conclusions.
