Toyota Files Voluntary Safety Campaign on Certain 2010 Lexus HS 250h Vehicles

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

TORONTO, ON, - Toyota Canada Inc. filed a Voluntary Safety Campaign with Transport Canada to recall 2010 model year Lexus HS 250h vehicles to address a compliance issue with Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 301.

As part of its annual compliance testing program, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently conducted a test of the 2010 model year HS 250h. The test involved striking the vehicle with a deformable barrier from the rear at approximately 80 km/h. The vehicle is struck by a moving deformable barrier with a 70 per cent overlap. As part of the test, the vehicle was then rotated on its longitudinal axis incrementally to each successive increment of 90 degrees. During the rotation, the vehicle exhibited fuel spillage that exceeded the requirement in the standard.

During vehicle development, Lexus tested the HS 250h using the same protocol and found the vehicles to comply fully with CMVSS 301. Lexus is currently working to identify the reason for the different test results and the cause of this noncompliance.

At the present time, Lexus has not identified a remedy to address this issue, but it is working hard to do so promptly and will notify owners as soon as one is developed. Until then, dealers will not deliver any new vehicles in their inventory that are included in this campaign until remedied.

Pirelli’s Creates ‘Formula One Team’

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Milan, - The chairman of the Pirelli Group, Marco Tronchetti Provera, and Pirelli Tyre’s managing director, Francesco Gori, presented to the media the company’s plans for supplying tyres to Formula One for the three-year period between 2011-2013.

The company’s programme includes the creation of a dedicated team for the development and production of Formula One tyres. The Team of internal Pirelli human resources, will be made up of engineers and researchers who have accumulated experience at the highest levels of motorsport: creating winning products for rallying, Superbike, the Rolex Sports Car Series in North America and GT racing, as well as various one-make series. This ensures that the other divisions of the company remain focused on the ongoing business.

In order to meet the Formula One teams’ requirements in terms of reliability, safety and performance, Pirelli’s engineers are already working on simulation models and tyre compounds that will be most suited to the rigours of Grand Prix racing.

The Pirelli Formula One team will be an international group of people based in Milan, the home of Pirelli Tyre’s research and development department. This division has traditionally been at the heart of Pirelli’s cutting-edge technology and is formed of 1000 research engineers, working in five development centres all over the world. Pirelli Tyre allocates each year between 3 and 4% of its revenues, the highest level in the tyre industry worldwide, to research. Motorsport activities have benefited for many years from the innovations introduced to high-performance tyres by Pirelli’s Research and Development.

The Formula One tyres will be produced in the motorsport department of Pirelli’s Izmit factory in Turkey, which is entirely dedicated to competition tyres.

As established by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), the Pirelli Formula 1 supply agreement includes development of six different types of tyre for the whole season. Four of these will be slick tyres – with different compounds to suit various dry asphalt surfaces – and one will be a rain tyre, for heavy precipitation. Finally there will be an intermediate tyre, for damp conditions and light rain.

In co-operation with the teams, Pirelli is also ready to develop technical evolutions to the current tyres for the future, regarding in particular the wheel size.

Today’s economic climate has enforced a realistic and collaborative approach to share out the production and logistical costs associated with supplying tyres to Formula One teams fairly. Pirelli will also invest in communications activities to leverage the technological and production values associated with Formula One, utilising resources and budget that have already been set aside for this specific purpose. Formula One will become an important showcase for the Pirelli brand along with its commercial and industrial growth, without impacting on the company’s existing financial strategy in any way.

In the coming years, Formula One is expected to attract around two billion television viewers per season, with important media coverage in emerging markets as well. Pirelli’s business development and growth strategy, which is concentrated in these areas, will benefit hugely from the global visibility offered by Formula One, helping to promote the brand and maximise return on the marketing investment.

GM Performance Parts At Barrett-Jackson Orange County

Friday, June 25th, 2010

GRAND BLANC, Mich. – GM Performance Parts (GMPP) groundbreaking E-ROD, a ’55 Chevy powered by the innovative, new E-ROD crate engine package, will highlight GMPP participation in the Barrett-Jackson Orange County auction June 25-27.

The E-ROD crate engine package includes a complete LS3 engine, emissions equipment and supporting components that enable classic cars to pass California’s stringent emissions tests.

No other original equipment or aftermarket manufacturer offers a comparable, emissions-compliant system.

“The E-ROD was introduced at the ‘09 SEMA Show with industry-wide approval,” said Jamie Meyer, product marketing manager for GM Performance Parts. “Since then, we’ve traveled to every speed shop, cruise night and car show in California, spreading the word about our California emissions-compliant 430-horse crate engine package. We’re looking forward to meeting the bidders at Barrett-Jackson and giving them some ideas about how they can have this same level of technology in their next project car build.”

The core of the E-ROD package is the LS3 6.2L V-8 engine, rated at 430 horsepower. Emissions equipment with the package includes catalytic converters, a fuel tank evaporative emissions canister and more.

GMPP worked closely with California Air Resources Board (CARB), California’s Bureau of Auto Repair (BAR) and Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) to develop the kit for “specially constructed vehicles” in California. The E-ROD package is also emissions-compliant for OBD-1 (1995) and earlier model vehicles.

OnStar Reaches No. 1 Milestone in China

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Shanghai – Only six months after being launched, General Motors’ OnStar has become the largest in-vehicle communications provider in China with more than 29,000 subscribers.

OnStar President Chris Preuss made the announcement Wednesday as part of the second “Drive to 2030” Sustainable Urban Mobility Forum at the SAIC-GM Pavilion at Expo 2010. General Motors hosted the “Mobility Internet - Connecting the Virtual Superhighway Forum” at the SAIC-GM Pavilion at Expo 2010.

With the promise of connecting automobiles to each other and to the transportation infrastructure, the Mobility Internet built on technologies like GM’s OnStar in-vehicle safety, security and communication service could revolutionize urban mobility and the global automotive industry.

The Mobility Internet is GM’s vision for a future of connected cars. It refers to the technologies that allow vehicles to collect process and share enormous amounts of data by linking them to each other and to an urban network, much as the Internet links computers today. The Mobility Internet will enable vehicle users to connect to their social networks, creating social interaction while on the road.

Building on the success of The Pathway to Sustainable Mobility Forum in May, the Mobility Internet forum attracted leading experts from the global business and academic community.

“The Mobility Internet will fundamentally change the way people move in the cities of the future,” said Kevin Wale, GM China President and Managing Director. “By redefining the automobile DNA through connectivity technologies, it will help eliminate the growing problems of congestion, traffic accidents and finding parking. At the same time, it will enable autonomous driving so that drivers can fully enjoy the wireless social network as they travel.

At World Expo 2010 Shanghai, GM is showcasing its vision of urban mobility in 2030, a vision in which driving is free from emissions and petroleum, free from congestion and accidents, and more fun and fashionable than ever before. Mobility Internet technologies will play an important role in making this vision a reality.

“Telephones and computers have evolved from desktop fixtures tethered by landlines to pocket-size devices that can go anywhere, anytime, connecting us wirelessly to the world via the Internet,” said John Du, director of GM’s China Science Lab. “Now it’s the automobile’s turn.”

Like laptop computers and cell phones, the connected car will offer a variety of convenience features while being able to sense what is around them, and communicate with other vehicles and the road system, Du said. This will optimize traffic while shortening travel times and make travel more predictable. Many of the technologies that will enable connected vehicles like GM’s EN-V (Electric Networked-Vehicle) concept exist today. The next step toward entering the Mobility Internet era is moving from concept to commercialization.”
