Honda Provides Gasoline-Free Vehicles for White House Correspondents’ Association Weekend

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Zero-emissions, hydrogen-powered FCX Clarity to shuttle guests and VIPs to annual black tie gala
In support of the White House Correspondents’ Association’s (WHCA) effort to reduce the carbon impact surrounding its annual black tie gala, Honda will be providing a gasoline-free fleet of vehicles to shuttle select VIPs and guests to the event. The eco-friendly Honda cars will hit the streets of Washington D.C. from April 30 through May 1, shuttling passengers to the WHCA dinner and to the various events that run throughout the weekend.

The highlight of the fleet will be the use of a zero emissions, hydrogen powered FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle. The sleek and modern sedan is propelled by an electric motor that runs on electricity generated in an on-board hydrogen fuel cell. The FCX Clarity’s only emission is water, and its fuel efficiency is three times that of a modern gasoline-powered automobile and two times that of a gasoline-powered hybrid vehicle.

Along with the FCX Clarity, several compressed natural gas -powered Civic GXs will be transporting guests around Washington D.C. The Honda Civic GX is the cleanest internal combustion vehicle ever certified by the EPA and was named the “Greenest Vehicle” by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE).

To kick off the Correspondents’ Weekend, the gasoline-free fleet will transport select invitees to the Honda, The Washington Post and Funnyordie.com sponsored First Amendment Party in Georgetown. The second annual event takes place on April 30th and benefits the Impact Arts + Film Fund, a Washington D.C.-based arts organization.

Statement by Acura Regarding TSX Recall

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Acura today announced a recall of approximately 167,000 Acura TSX vehicles to replace a power steering hose. Affected TSX vehicles are 2004-2008 models sold in the United States with the 2.4L inline 4-cylinder engine. The repair involves installing a new power steering hose, o-ring gasket and fluid– all done at no cost to the vehicle owner.

The recall is being conducted due to the potential for premature deterioration of the exterior surface of the hose as a result of prolonged exposure to high under-hood temperatures. In the event of excessive deterioration, a crack in the hose could develop, which could allow power steering fluid to leak or spray on a hot exhaust component potentially generating smoke or a fire. Acura has only received notice of one incident resulting in a fire.

2010 Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles Will Feature On- the-Spot Announcement of Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year from “Top Three” Finalists in Attendance

The Collegiate Women Sports Awards program today announced several key changes to the 2010 Honda-Broderick Cup presentation ceremony. Notably, in a move that is sure to heighten the excitement, the program will designate its “Top Three” finalists for Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year. All three will be scheduled to attend the Los Angeles ceremony on June 21, at which the Honda-Broderick Cup winner will be revealed to everyone in attendance - including the finalists themselves.

The Honda-Broderick Cup is given annually to a female athlete selected from a group of 12 individual Honda Sports Award winners chosen from separate NCAA-sanctioned sports throughout the year. Last year’s winner was gymnastics star Courtney Kupets of the University of Georgia.

New Alternating Schedule Between Los Angeles and New York
After being held in New York City since 2003, this year marks the beginning of an alternating annual schedule for the awards ceremony between Los Angeles and New York. Following the 2010 event at the University of California, Los Angeles, it will return to New York for 2011, then back to Los Angeles for a ceremony at the University of Southern California in 2012.

CWSA board member Tora Grossman noted: “We’re thrilled to be having our year-end awards event in Los Angeles. It will be a terrific opportunity for us to publicly recognize our Top Three athletes, and we’re especially looking forward to the excitement and anticipation as the winner of the Honda-Broderick Cup will be revealed.”

In addition to the Honda-Broderick Cup, the Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards Program will also present its annual Honda Inspiration Award to a deserving collegiate female athlete at the June 21 awards ceremony, as well as Honda’s Division II and III Athlete of the Year honors.

The Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards, now in its 34th year, annually honors the accomplishments of female athletes in NCAA-member colleges around the country, acknowledging athletic excellence as well as team contributions, academic achievement and social involvement. Past winners of the Honda-Broderick Cup include Candace Parker, Mia Hamm, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Misty May.

All 12 individual Honda Sports Award winners are automatically nominated for the Honda- Broderick Cup, presented to the Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year. The first six winners for this year have already been announced. They are: Angela Bizzarri from the University of Illinois for cross country, Katie O’Donnell from the University of Maryland for field hockey, Whitney Engen from the University of North Carolina for soccer, Megan Hodge from Penn State University for volleyball, Julia Smit from Stanford University for swimming & diving and Maya Moore from the University of Connecticut for basketball. Honda Sports Award winners in golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, softball, tennis and track & field will be announced in the coming months.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. has sponsored the Collegiate Women Sports Awards Program for 25 consecutive years. Honda has donated over $2 million in grants and scholarships to universities over the course of the program.

Oklahoma to Become Fourth Retail Market for Honda’s Natural Gas-Powered Civic GX

Friday, April 30th, 2010

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., today (26.04.2010)announced that dealers in Oklahoma will now have the option of selling the compressed natural gas (CNG) powered Honda Civic GX to customers on a retail basis. There are 13 Honda dealers in Oklahoma, three of which are already selling the Civic GX as a fleet vehicle.

“Expanding Honda’s Civic GX retail program along with the continued success of fleet sales expresses our commitment to the environment and natural gas vehicle technology,” said Elmer Hardy, senior manager of Alternative Fuel Vehicle Sales & Marketing. “Honda seeks market opportunities for the Civic GX where strong natural gas refueling infrastructure exists, and we continue to see its promise as a clean, sustainable, domestically-sourced alternative fuel.”

Honda is the only OEM currently selling a CNG-powered vehicle on a retail basis in the United States. Additionally, the Civic GX is the only OEM-built, CNG-powered passenger car assembled in America. The Civic GX is built on the same assembly line as the gasoline-powered Civic 4-door models at Honda’s Greensburg, Indiana manufacturing facility.

In 2006, the Civic GX became available for the first time to retail customers in California. Since then, retail sales have expanded to New York, Utah and now, Oklahoma. Currently, 43 dealers in California, 19 in New York and eight in Utah have added Retail Sales Addendums to their Honda Sales Agreements that enable them to sell the Civic GX on a retail basis. When including dealerships that sell fleet vehicles, there are a total of 134 Civic GX dealers in 33 states.

Oklahoma is an ideal market to expand retail sales of the Civic GX with its low refueling costs, a generous state tax incentive toward the purchase of a new Civic GX and solid fleet sales. As the second largest natural gas producing state in the U.S., Oklahoma already has a strong existing CNG station infrastructure with robust plans to expand the network over the next several years.

The 2010 Civic GX achieves an EPA-estimated city/highway fuel economy of 24/36** miles per gasoline-gallon equivalent and is the only vehicle certified by the EPA to meet both Federal Tier 2-Bin 2 and Inherently Low Emission Vehicle (ILEV) zero evaporative emission certification standards. Additionally, the Honda Civic GX is the cleanest internal combustion vehicle ever tested by the EPA, and for the seventh straight year, the Civic GX NGV was named “Greenest Vehicle” by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE).

Hyundai Unveils All-New Avante At Busan Motor Show

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Hyundai Motor Co. had its world-premier of the all-new Avante compact sedan, the company’s best-selling model worldwide, at the Busan International Motor Show 2010 today.

“The new Avante encompasses Hyundai’s latest ambitions, featuring the best styling and performance in its class,” Steve S. Yang, President & CEO of Hyundai’s Global Business Division, said at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO) today. “We’re confident that it will once again redefine the compact segment worldwide.”

With sportier and even more elegant lines than its predecessor, the new Avante ? badged as Elantra in markets outside Korea - continues Hyundai’s ‘fluidic sculpture’ design philosophy.

Hyundai has applied its latest 1.6L Gamma Gasoline Direct Injection engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission to the front-wheel drive compact, the first time GDI and six-speed automatic have been featured on a compact sedan in Korea. The new Avante delivers a peak output of 140ps and maximum torque of 17.0kg·m. It is also about 10 percent more fuel efficient than its closest competitors, thanks to GDI, the six speed automatic and other fuel economy enhancements.

The new Avante will delight and surprise with a raft of other advanced features not found on other compacts, including HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlamps, LED combination lamps in the rear, heated rear seats, puddle lamps and a color TFT LCD information display nestled in the gauge cluster.

Under the Avante/Elantra badge, Hyundai has sold over 6 million units worldwide since the car’s launch in 1990. Hyundai will begin sales of the all-new Avante in the second half of 2010 in Korea.

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance recognized two Subaru vehicles as “Best” in their categories in its annual buyers’ guide, “2010 Cars: Where the Deals Are.” The all-new 2010 Subaru Legacy won “Best New Car” in the $25,000 - $30,000 category, while the all-new 2010 Subaru Outback won both “Best in Class” and “Best New Wagon” in the “Wagons” category. Popular I30 Reaches Half A Million Sales Landmark

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Hyundai’s C-segment family car, the European designed and built i30, last month passed cumulative sales of 500.000 units worldwide. This landmark figure – which includes over 200.000 units from the European market – is testament to the high quality and broad appeal of the versatile i30, which has cemented its position as a leading contender in its segment.

The i30, in hatchback and wagon forms, has dominated Hyundai’s European sales charts since its launch in the summer of 2007, when it was initially imported from the Ulsan plant in Korea. Since the opening of company’s first European plant, in Nošovice, Czech Republic, in November 2008, Hyundai has sold over 150.000 European-built i30s, including 95.000 examples during 2009.

“As the i30 approaches its third birthday we do not expect its popularity to diminish, especially now that the upgraded model, the i30u, is going on sale across Europe,” commented Allan Rushforth, Vice President of Hyundai Motor Europe. “This new vehicle offers a wide range of new features and benefits, including the ground-breaking Triple5 customer support package.”

Triple5 provides i30u owners with a five-year, bumper-to-bumper warranty, five years’ roadside assistance, and a five-year vehicle health-check plan.

Hyundai’s achievement with sales of its i30 is of an epic scale. For example, if all the i30 models sold so far were lined up bumper to bumper, they would cover twice the distance between Nošovice, where the i30 is manufactured, and Geneva, where the car was first unveiled in 2007. Stacked on top of one another, the 500.000 i30s would create a tower 154 times the height of Europe’s highest mountain, Mount Blanc.

i30 tops customer satisfaction and reliability survey

Meanwhile, the Hyundai i30 has been named the most satisfying car to own in a survey completed by over 23.000 drivers. The popular C-segment family hatchback took number one spot in Driver Power Top 100; a definitive poll on car reliability and satisfaction compiled by Auto Express, the UK’s best-selling weekly motoring magazine. This was the first time that a vehicle from a Korean manufacturer has topped the survey. The i30 in fact beat all other models on sale, including a host of prestige names and last year’s winner, the Jaguar XF.

In Malta, customers too can participate in this success by benefiting from a great offer on the i30 which is being made available starting from only €15,200 with €0 down-payment and €220 monthly installments over the next 7 years, along with a 5-year warranty. Moreover, Hyundai owners who participate in the Hyundai Car Clinic and are interested in trading in their vehicle for a new Hyundai i30 are also being given the chance to benefit from a €700 discount on the Hyundai i30 1.4ltr Classic which is currently being offered at a discounted price of €15,200. Other offers will also apply on the Hyundai i20 at a starting price of €11,700.

Hyundai Motor Reports 1st Quarter Earnings

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea’s largest automaker, sold 842,037 units (domestic plants: 397,646 units, overseas plants: 444,391 units) worldwide in the first quarter, a 36.6 percent increase from a year earlier, helped by the launch of new models and strong demand in overseas markets.

Net profit increased almost fivefold to 1.13 trillion won ($1.02 billion), boosted by a surge in equity earnings from overseas subsidiaries such as China and India. Operating profit also rose to 702.7 billion won compared to 153.8 billion won a year earlier, while sales increased 39.6 percent to 8.4 trillion won.

Hyundai’s jump in first-quarter earnings can be attributed to the successful launch of its new models such as the all-new Sonata and Tucson ix (named Tucson/ix35 in other regions). Global auto demand, especially in emerging markets, is also showing signs of a recovery, boosting sales. Hyundai’s operating profit margin also rose to 8.3 percent from 2.5 percent during the same period a year earlier.

In spite of the uncertain business environment across the globe, Hyundai continues to raise brand awareness and expand market share in the U.S and European markets, based on quality improvements.

As seen from the all-new Sonata and Tucson ix, Hyundai has enhanced its design and product competitiveness. Hyundai will continue to introduce new models at the right time with differentiated marketing strategies, while expanding its sales network worldwide, to increase market share and competitiveness in advanced and emerging markets alike.

As part of its eco-friendly management strategy, Hyundai will also continue to expand its lineup of highly fuel-efficient and competitive cars, such as its first gasoline-hybrid vehicle, the Sonata Hybrid, which it launched last month in the U.S.

In preparation for uncertain factors lying ahead, such as rising oil and raw material prices and strengthening currency exchange rates, Hyundai will boost its market share by launching new models fit for each region and maximize profitability by cutting costs.
