Mazda to Provide Green Electricity for Japanese Pro Baseball’s 2009 All-Star Games

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation will provide electricity generated from renewable sources, such as wind power, solar power, and biomass, for two all-star games organized by the Nippon Professional Baseball Association (NPB) in Japan. These ‘green powered’ 2009 all-star games will be played at the Sapporo Dome on July 24 and at the MAZDA Zoom-Zoom Stadium Hiroshima on July 25, 2009.

Mazda is committed to the pursuit of driving pleasure balanced with environmental and safety performance. As part of this pledge, Mazda is supporting the ‘NPB2008 Green Baseball Project,’ an initiative involving Japan’s 12 professional baseball teams that is intended to help prevent global warming.

Eco-friendly ‘green electricity’ will be used for the games under the “Green Power Certification System.” Mazda will indirectly provide the electricity to illuminate the nighttime all-star 2009 games by purchasing a “Green Power Certificate” for 12,000 kilowatt hours and presenting it to the Nippon Professional Baseball Association (NPB). Using green power for the games is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 6.6 metric tons.

Lexus Launches ‘HS250h’ in Japan

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Tokyo, July 14, 2009 - Lexus announces the launch in Japan today of the “HS250h”*1, its first dedicated hybrid model.

Based on the brand’s core principle of “pursuing the essence of luxury”, Lexus aimed to develop a luxurious “harmonious sedan”, hence the “HS” in the vehicle’s name. The result is a car that not only exists harmoniously with Earth and people but also exudes the high quality for which Lexus is renowned.

Specifically, the HS250h combines outstanding driving performance with a hybrid-system-achieved 23.0km/l*2 fuel efficiency, which is exceptional for a premium sedan. A concerted effort has also been made to use Ecological Plastic, a plant-based plastic that reduces environmental impact, for interior parts and components. Further, the cockpit environment has been designed to lessen the need for physical movement or switching visual focus, thus allowing the driver to concentrate fully on the task of driving. These are among the advanced features that make the HS250h a new breed of premium sedan.

Lexus plans to introduce the HS250h in North America in September.

Nissan Introduces New Dual Injector System for Improved Fuel Efficiency in Gasoline Engines

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the development of a Dual Injector system designed to improve fuel efficiency in gasoline engines. The new fuel delivery system, the first of its kind in the world*1, uses an injector for each port rather than one per cylinder - speeding up fuel vaporization, reducing the amount of unburned fuel and reducing hydrocarbon emissions. Nissan will introduce the new system in production vehicles starting early in fiscal 2010.

10

While most current gasoline engines utilize one injector per cylinder (furnishing fuel to two intake ports), the new Nissan Dual Injector system doubles the number of injectors per cylinder. This reduces the diameter of the fuel droplets by about 60%, resulting in smoother, more stable combustion.

10

The system also adds continuous valve timing control on the exhaust side to conventional intake-side control, improving heat efficiency, reducing pumping losses and raising fuel efficiency by up to 4%*2 in sync with the dual injectors.

While similar in theory to “direct-injection” systems, which also inject fuel directly into cylinders, such direct injection systems are difficult to use on small-displacement engines because they require a high-pressure pump that complicates system design, making component layout less cost-efficient. In contrast, the Nissan Dual Injector system is lighter and structurally simpler because it furnishes fuel at normal pressures, reducing cost by about 60% compared to direct-injection engines of similar displacement.

All-New Mazda Axela Proves Popular in Japan

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Mazda Motor Corporation today announced that it received 7,640 orders for the all-new Mazda Axela (known overseas as the new Mazda3) during its first month of sales in Japan, since its launch on June 11 through to July 12, 2009. This result is 3.8 times the monthly sales target of 2,000 units.

1

Exceeding initial expectations, half of the total orders have been for models with i-stop, Mazda’s unique engine stop-start system, which is standard equipment on 2.0-liter models (20C, 20S and the front-wheel drive [FWD] 20E grade).

Approximately 70 percent of customers selected the Sport (five-door hatchback) body type, with the remaining 30 percent opting for the four-door Sedan version. Approximately 50 percent of customers selected models with the 2.0-liter engine, while 40 percent chose the 1.5-liter engine. By model grade, 30 percent of the orders were for the 15C Sport, 28 percent for the 20S Sport, 14 percent for the 15C Sedan, and 10 percent for the FWD 20E Sedan.

Mazda has received orders from a wide range of people, although most buyers have been men in their twenties and thirties, or people who have families and are in their fifties and sixties. Customer feedback indicates that the main reasons for choosing the Axela are its exterior design, excellent environmental performance enhanced by the i-stop feature, and outstanding driving performance and safety features.

The all-new Mazda3 is progressively being rolled out in global markets. Highlighted by early success in Australia, where the new model set an all-time record for Mazda3 monthly sales in June 2009, Mazda’s updated eco-sports car is also enjoying healthy demand overseas.

Subaru wins five Bucks from MOTOR

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

MOTOR magazine today announced the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Impreza WRX has won Subaru’s fifth Bang For Your Bucks performance cartitle.

The ultimate test of the best performance cars on sale in Australia saw the Model Year 2009 Impreza WRX triumph against some expensive heavy metal and key competitors.

MOTOR says: “Proof that the writing was on the wall is that the WRX was more than half a second quicker to 100 km/h than anything else in this year’s BFYB.”

It adds: “The 2.5 litre boxer feels lustier than any WRX in recent memory. It spools up boost hard and early, delivering a thick 343 Nm of torque right where you need it. No peaks, no troughs, no dramas.”

It continues: “The time-honoured Subaru chassis balance and adjustability still shine. It’s playful on the throttle and remains an inherently fun car. There’s a bit more purchase with the roadholding, and more purpose in its dynamic abilities. It also runs rings around the Lancer Ralliart.”

MOTOR concludes: “The WRX put in an emphatic performance, and its victory is well deserved. It’s great to see the legend back in the winners’s circle.”

Nick Senior, Managing Director, Subaru Australia, said: “We’re delighted that Impreza WRX has won back its BFYB crown, its fifth in 12 years.

“Our engineers worked tirelessly to bring the revised MY09 version to the market and its combination of fun, grip and control have been recognised by the judges at MOTOR.”

Subaru’s Bang for Your Bucks success story:

- Impreza WRX - winner 1998
- Impreza WRX - winner 1999
- Impreza WRX STI - winner 2002
- Impreza WRX STI - winner 2005
- Impreza WRX - winner 2009

BFYB includes road and racetrack testing, including 0-100km/h times, 0-400 metres and top speed.

AutoAlliance Thailand Inaugurates New Passenger Car Plant

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Mazda Motor Corporation has announced the completion of the new passenger car plant at AutoAlliance Thailand (AAT), a joint venture manufacturing facility with Ford Motor Company.

To celebrate the new plant’s opening, Thailand’s Crown Princess, HRH Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, will be joined by Japan Ambassador Kyoji Komachi, U.S. Ambassador Eric John, and senior executives from Mazda, Ford, and AAT in a formal ceremony in the afternoon at the new state-of-the-art facility in Rayong’s Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate.

The completed passenger car plant increases the total annual production capacity at AAT to 275,000 units (including CKD units). The new plant will produce the Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta compact cars for sale in Thailand and export throughout the Asia-Pacific region. AAT already exports Mazda and Ford pickup trucks to more than 130 markets around the world.

“The new passenger car plant at AutoAlliance Thailand will play an important role as a production base in Mazda’s global strategy. The new plant employs the industry’s latest flexible manufacturing technologies, ensuring world-class quality, safety and environmental friendliness,” said Masaharu Yamaki, executive vice president, Mazda Motor Corporation.

“AAT continues to be a global success story in terms of the superb cooperation between Mazda, Ford and AAT employees who constantly strive to achieve a shared vision of success. I have every confidence this teamwork will enable us to overcome the current market challenges and lead us to further business growth,” added Yamaki.

The new, highly flexible passenger car plant utilizes the latest automotive manufacturing technologies and systems, including a new stamping line and body shop, trim and final process areas.

The completed paint shop can now accommodate both pickup trucks and passenger cars, and uses the environmentally-friendly Three Layer Wet Paint system, which dramatically reduces volatile organic compound (VOC) and CO2 emissions, and improves vehicle painting quality.

“The completion of the new AAT passenger car plant represents a tremendous achievement that is shared by all of our stakeholders - Ford, Mazda, the Thai government, and in particular, the Board of Investment, our suppliers, and certainly our dedicated AAT employees,” said Kiyotaka Shobuda, president of AutoAlliance Thailand.

“The world-class passenger cars we’ll produce will further solidify AAT’s continued role in both Mazda and Ford’s global strategy, and supports the further expansion and growth of Thailand’s auto industry and its leading role in the ASEAN region as a global automotive production hub,” added Shobuda.
